Anonymous Devotee from India says:

I wish to remain anonymous. Dear Sai, I need Your blessing to express, what I feel for You. Give me the strength Baba. And please forgive me for forgetting the Nayvedyam offering I do to You every day. Baba, I don’t know what is actually meant by true devotion. Please make me pray to You with true devotion and please let all my prayers reach You. Guide me through the correct path. I am 17 years old girl. My mother is a devotee of Baba. So I am one of the lucky persons to be acquainted with Baba right from the age I came into senses. Baba was a normal God to me, when I was a child. I am unable to make out the exact reason, why I turned towards Him. But whatever the reason is, I am fortunate.

I have the habit of reading a book before going to sleep. One day, I saw Sai Lilamrutam (a collection of Sai Leelas, written by Shri Ekkirala Bharadwaja) on my study table. I don’t know how it came onto my table. And I started reading it. Slowly I was so involved in it that I continued reading it day and night. While reading few miracles of those blessed ones out there, my eyes used to water and I used to get goose bumps all over. I am not so sure of the chronology of the events, as I started connecting them now because I could not realize them at that time because Ways of Sai are inhumane.

One of those days, when I was reading Sai Lilamrutam, I got a dream, where Sai was sitting behind a curtain in a small house in Hyderabad (not in my house). Many devotees were coming to see Him and talk to Him and (I remember informing one of the devotee, who came there that Sai is in Hyderabad). When my turn came to talk to Sai, He said that mine is not true devotion towards Him and when I started crying, He said “don’t cry, I know it’s all false cry”. The next day, I said my mother about this and she said “Maybe Sai wants you to be more devotional”. One night, while going to sleep, I was thinking about Baba and His miracles. I asked my mother “Why Sai gives Darshan to the people, who don’t even know Him. He stretched His hand to help out people in need. Then why is He not showering His blessings on us? Why didn’t He help us, when we were in trouble?” And I started crying. She said it depends upon their past life karma and if you pray Sai with true devotion and trust in Him, He will come to you. I could not understand.
I don’t know what is meant by devotion. I don’t know how to be devotional and how to believe in God. So I didn’t care much about that dream and days passed by and I continued reading Lilamrutam every day. Then one day, I had a problem and I was crying bitterly. I burst out my emotions and questioned Sai if He really exists and if He was hearing to my prayers, I opened Sai questions book and answer was “I am there in Your house. You are worrying as you are not able to see me”. I was shocked and was crying. I told my mother. She said “Yes Baba is there in your room” and showed me a photo hung on a wall in my room. I immediately decided that I should do puja to Sai every day. I light two lamps and offer Naivedyam every day.

Sai Baba vehicle used to come to my street very often and we used to give them 2 rupees. On my mother’s birthday, Baba vehicle came and she gave money as usual. I was surprised. Sai came to bless her on her birthday. Then I thought “Sai should come and bless me on my birthday as well. I would give Him 102 rupees”. Few days before my birthday, I forgot to offer Naivedyam to Sai. But the desire in my heart that Sai vehicle should come, has strengthened. The night before my birthday, I prayed to Baba with a whole heart and tears in my mind that He should come. It was morning. I was waiting for the vehicle to come. There were no signs of the vehicle. Again I opened the questions page and the answer was “Apologies for forgetting and offer sweet to Sai. Your desire will be fulfilled”. Then I realized that I did not offer Naivedyam the other day. So I immediately made seera (a sweet) and offered it to Sai. And then I waited for the vehicle to come. Still there were no signs of the vehicle. So I said to Sai “if You accept me as Your devotee, You should come and bless me, otherwise I will fast for the whole day. If You don’t come, I will assume that You want me to stay on a fast”. And then I got a call from a friend that they were waiting for me at the bus stop to meet me and wish me and they asked me to come there at once. So I planned to give them a treat at the nearby bakery. It was a formality. But I didn’t want to break my fast and also I was confident that if Sai vehicle will come, it will come only after I return home. So I drank juice at the bakery and came home.

I said my mother about my decision of keeping a fast and that I don’t want to have lunch. It was around 12:30. I was reading Lilamrutam and then I could hear a Sai song from the street. And I could hear a vehicle with a rolling sound and yes it was Sai vehicle. My happiness knew no bounds. I gave my Dakshina of 102 rupees. Sai gave me His blessings on my birthday.

Few days back, my brother was admitted in hospital. He has allergic bronchitis and he gets a severe attack usually in winter. I prayed Sai that he should be discharged from the hospital within two days. From my swimming, I went to Sai temple and there an old man gave me Shirdi prasad. I was very happy. He offered me to write a Sai 1000 Namas (names) book to fulfill any wish. It was 6 :00 pm. And it takes me an hour or so to write and it would be late. And my parents might be worried. But I said to Sai "You do something. I am leaving it to You." and decided to write and prayed to Sai that my brother should be discharged within 2 days. And then after going home, I realized that my parents (in hospital) were not worried about me as they thought that I went to my cousin’s home from swimming. While my cousin thought that I was in hospital with my parents. Now I understood the meaning of “trust in God". I gave the prasad to my brother and he was discharged from the hospital exactly on second day evening. I know that Sai is with me always. But I want to know what is meant by devotion. How can someone surrender himself to God by devotion? If you are really devoted to God will he perform all your duties and responsibilities? What does Sai expect from His devotees? Only devotion? I would be highly obliged and thankful if anyone can help me by answering.

  3. Well, devotion for me is not about performing big rituals etc, just simply putting diyas infront of god and leaving all our daily activities/problems at his feet is good enough devotion. Devotion means unwavering faith in him. Even if we are fully devoted to god he won't fulfill all our duties/responsibilites. It depends on our past/present karma. He will definetly lessen the burden if we ask him but karma needs to be faced. What sai expects from devotees is not only devotion, he wants us to be a good human being. Be good to all, help people, feed hungry, reduce anger, ego, selfishness etc and he wants us to be satisfied with what we have and to go ahead with daily activities but just remember him. om sai ram.

    1. I accept what above devotee said. Especially the point "Devotion means unwavering faith in him".
If you have faith, you think that what ever is happening, is for our good instead of cursing the situation. When you start accepting things you will realize good and bad of current situation. Example, if some elder or teacher or manger or colleague scolded or blamed you, instead of getting angry on them, with clam mind think why did they do that. In that case either you will realize if it was your mistake or it was just because of the other person's nature. In first case you get to change or correct your self. In second scenario you are more compassionate to forgive others.
So my point is by true devotion you will be always correcting yourself or learn to be more patient to the situation and forgive others. These all good qualities (Kind heart, Respect all, away from Anger, jealousy, cunning) come only with true devotion and firm faith on GOD

  4. How can someone surrender himself to God by devotion?
Just keep praying with true devotion. No body remembers Baba until he wants them to. When the right time approaches Baba will himself show the path to his feet.

If you are really devoted to God will he perform all your duties and responsibilities?
No. You have to do your part right. Complete you task to the best of your abilities and then leave the rest to Baba, he will ensure your satisfaction.

What does Sai expect from His devotees? Only devotion?
Yes. True devotion. Love. Faith and Patience.

  5. Dear SAI Devotee

Devotion means Remembering SAI with each breath,

Do your Karma & leave the Fruit in HIS hand.

    Devotion is LOVING SAI Unconditionally.

Devotion is when you think that whatever HAPPENS is HIS WILL. You just flow with HIS WILL.

Accepting HIS WILL (That is SURRENDER), is also Devotion.

Best Example of Surrender & Trust in Indian History is Arjuna, when He given reins of His Horses to KRISHNA.

Did you ever wondered how come GOD was charioteer of Arjuna?

It was only possible as Arjuna Had the Faith to trust GOD & surrender to HIS feet.

If you Trust that SAI will take care of your worries, surely HE does.

Do not Question HIS WAYS-HE does Best for us.

    Lots SAI PREMA

  6. Very nice experiences! Baba helped to have your brother leave the hospital soon by His grace and helping your brother get better soon. Baba helps us to grow our devotion, like a young sapling plant, and with time and nourishment, our devotion grows. We should just keep our mind on Baba when going about our daily lives and also act in accordance with good behavior (not trying to cheat people, being kind to others, etc). Om Sai Ram!

  10. Dear sai sister, if you want to be devoted to sai, you should leave all your doubts and ego and realise that sai really exists everywhere and looks after everyone. You should not indulge yourself in any sins like talking bad of others, being selfish, etc., because it will widen the gap between you and sai. In order to be close to sai, you should try to help and love every creature that is in need. It's a way to realise that sai is in every form of life.

  16. Om Sai Ram.

I would like to share a short and sweet Leela of Baba here. Yesterday was the concluding day of my 9 Thursday Vrat and we thought of inviting a few of my Husband's colleagues home for lunch. I thought of wearing a saree for Puja. But my husband was uncomfortable ad was feeling shy to see me in saree around his colleagues ! He is usually a little shy. Anyway, i just prayed to Baba that my husband should himself ask me to be in saree for the day. I wore it and he liked it and specifically asked me to keep wearing it when his colleagues come ! I was thrilled and happy that Baba heard me and fulfilled my wish. Thanks a lot Baba. Please be with us always and bless us all.

    Love you Baba.

  21. i m not sure but i think devotion means following each and every word of sai...jo bhi baba ki teaching hai unhe follow karna dil se..jaise be humble, feed hungry,be ego-less,dont talk ill etc..pura vishwaas..even if u r in hell believe that baba chahte hain ki hum apne purane bure karmo ka fal bhog le taki baad mein humein wo is janam maran se mukt kar denge...kuch bhi bura ho still believing in him is devotion...but its hard very very hard...i dont know abt others par mere liye hai..jaise hi dard had se bahar ho jata hai mein frustrate ho jati hun...sonce my childhood m suffering..i dont even know what chilhood is..as i never lived a life like a child m 34 now..unmarried, unsettled and depressed i know its my karmas..i pray to baba par not with devotion bcoz i started to feel now baba is never going to listen to me..and off course dats not devotion..

  28. Sai Ram ji. I enjoyed reading your experiences with our Sai Ma and it was equally enlightening to read the responses of Sai brothers and sisters.I have been in Baba's sharan for the last 6 years. I am a small devotee and I am not sure whether I have the wisdom to respond to your question but I feel like sharing my thoughts.I personally feel that true devotion means following Baba's teachings at every step. As mentioned in Sri Sai Satcharitra, Shradha and Saburi are twin sisters. Devotion and patience stay hand in hand. I think that Baba is forever testing us and keeping a strict watch on our conduct. He is doing it out of love for us and for our betterment. We must thank Him for this. Whenever I do something inappropriate,Baba makes me realize my mistake in some way or the other. I thank Him for this."Sai Ma please keep correcting me" It is wonderful to chant his name day and night but it is extremly important to be egoless. We humans tend to be arrogant and our ego creeps in on most trivial issues and we loose patience (Saburi). Whenever somebody is unkind towards me, my instant reaction is anger and I am hurt but Baba teaches me to forgive and forget. The moment I am upset or annoyed, I remember Baba's saying " I love those who endure" and it encourages me and gives me immense strength to calm down as I feel that Baba will love me even more if I do not breed any ill feeling.I also feel that it is very important to realize that arrogance is our enemy.Small achievements in life make us proud but we must remember that our achievements are due to Baba's blessings and we must thank Him at all times.
This is my understanding of Devotion. I seek forgiveness from our Sai Ma if I have made any errors in my comments.
Jai sai Ram ji ki to all.

  31. Hello,
I think it's great that at 17 years, you have a great spiritual curiosity bc it's not common in girls at your age. The funny thing that happened is as I was writing about true devotion my computer suddenly crashed and it's my exam time too. I was really anxious and scared asking Baba why did you do this to me now. Finally, I just let it go and told him everything is in your will. After 2 hours, the computer started without any problems. I felt Baba taught me that true devotion is having the same kind of devotion and faith in Baba no matter what kind of situation you are in at your life(good or bad).
